Adapted Design
Living barrier free is referred to by many names such as Universal Design, ADA and Aging-in-Place.
All of these terms encompass a simple concept of adapting our environments to accommodate people of all abilities. The concept is based on the following:
- Multi-generational housing design that gives rebirth to the concept of accommodating family members from several generations all under one roof. This typically consists of grandparents, parents and grandchildren all residing together in a home adapted to accommodate the special needs of each generation.
- American with Disabilities Act (ADA) very simply is a standardized building code that specifically addresses providing accessibility in buildings for those with mobility challenges.
- Aging-in-Place is the concept of adapting standard building practices to accommodate aging individuals who want live independently as long as possible. This includes adapting architecture design in new construction as well as adapting existing structures to create barrier free environments.
